Too much money spent on looking after and repairing old building. Some people think we should knock old buildings down and built new modern one.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Often spent and rotten, pieces of age-old architecture other than tourist attractions have led to a recent controversy over whether we should restore and refurbish them or just demolish them to make way for some modern high rises. From myperspective, this is not a white and black question, especially when buildings of different value and buildings in different conditions are separately considered.

On the one hand, there are indeed some old buildings that it would be a pitty to tear downwould. For instance, palaces, temples of large scale and even some meaningful but run-down dwellings of celebrities in the past are no longer something that people would shrug off. Rather, some of them are well protected for they are often deemed to be the very embodiments of traditional essence in architecture. People from not only the same country but also the four corners of the world would pay visits to these places in order to get a deeper sense of the splendid history behind. Therefore, on an economic level, the development of tourism and cultural exchange call for the preservation of these buildings.

On the other hand, it will be utterly another story if the old buildings are not of that great significance and are so worn-out that they will produce potential safety hazards. In some of the cities peppered with slum areas where old and run-down tenements could be often seen, it is acknowledged that these buildings should be definitely removed - For long as they may exist and although they are worth being respected, these buildings would sometimes give rise to public concerns about their safety conditions owing to a long-term lack of maintenance.

Traditional culture should be treasured in every country, and we thus should protect some of its symbols which are the precious old buildings like palaces and temples we have mentioned. But the case should be carefully considered as for those of less value and those even posing potential threats to the safety of citizens.
